　　In addition to his desire to reform and centralize the legal system, Henry Ⅱ also hoped to re-assert control of the Church. However,the process of strengthening the roya courts yielded an unexpected controversy.The church courts,instituted by William the Conqueror for justice,i-ronically became a safe haven for criminals of varying degree and ability as church courts had ex-clusively right of justice.Extending the jurisdiction of the King's courts brought conflict with his close friend and chosen archbishop,Thomas Becket,The bitter contest bebtween them was finally put to an end when four ambitious knights murdered Beckett in his own cathedral on December 29,1170.Beckett had preached against the King's reforms in Canterbury Cathedral,after which the exasperated king hastily and publicly conveyed his wish to be rid of the contentious Archbish-op.This event outraged all Christendom,and Henry had to reconcile with the Pope by promis-ing financial aid to the Crusad.Henry endured a rather limited storm of protest over the inci-dent and the controversy passed.　　……
