　　本書比較深入廣泛地考察了一個(gè)特殊時(shí)期英國人對(duì)中國的評(píng)價(jià)。而且，不是只考察幾個(gè)著名人物的看法，而是考察了能夠查閱到的幾乎所有有關(guān)作者的看法。因此，本書能夠做到比較全面地揭示當(dāng)時(shí)英國人對(duì)中國的評(píng)價(jià)。本書的考察揭示了英國人評(píng)華時(shí)存在明顯的不同看法，揭示了英國對(duì)中國評(píng)價(jià)的發(fā)展變化狀況。這是不能通過簡單考察幾個(gè)著名人物的對(duì)華評(píng)價(jià)所能夠發(fā)現(xiàn)或揭示的。

作者簡介

　　張順洪，中國社會(huì)科學(xué)院世界歷史研究所所長，研究員，1983年武漢大學(xué)歷史系畢業(yè)，獲學(xué)士學(xué)位；1989年英國倫敦大學(xué)畢業(yè)，獲歷史學(xué)博士學(xué)位。1990年到世界歷史研究所工作。主要研究領(lǐng)域?yàn)橛⒌蹏?、中英關(guān)系史。主要著作有：《大英帝國的瓦解》（張順洪等著）、《英美新殖民主義》（合著）。代表性淪文有：《馬戛爾尼和阿美士德對(duì)華評(píng)價(jià)與態(tài)度的比較》、《論英國的非殖民化》、《戰(zhàn)后英國關(guān)于殖民地公職人員的政策》、《關(guān)于殖民主義史研究的幾個(gè)問題》、《英屬東非公職機(jī)構(gòu)本土化初考》；英文論文有：'HistoricalAnachronism：The
Qing Court's Perception of and Reaction to the Macartney

版權(quán)頁：In the late eighteenth century, there were heated and conflictingarguments in Britain about the slave trade and slavery within theempire. Influenced by this, the writers of the embassy paid muchattention to the question of whether there were slaves and slavery inChina. As in other respects, their opinions differed. John Barrowasserted that the people in China were, in effect, slaves in thesense that they had little freedom under an arbitrary government.Every man was liable to be made a slave since the laws allowed afather to sell  is sons. 58 George L.Staunton said that a man mightsell himself to another man in certain cases, but he was entitled tohis liberty at the end of twenty years of servitude if his conductproved to be unimpeachable.59 Stephen Else asserted that there didexist a species of slavery' among the Chinese and some were evens born slaves'. However, Aeneas Anderson had an opposing view,saying it was a fable that in China masters were desirous of promo-ting marriage among their slaves in order to increase their numberas there was c no such class of people as slaves in the Chinese em-pire'.
