《金融家》是德萊塞《欲望三部曲》的第一部。這部三部曲的歷史背景是19世紀末葉，美國資本主義走向帝國主義階段的時期，寫的是金融巨頭柯帕烏的個人發(fā)跡史?！督鹑诩摇分饕枋隹屡翞鯊囊粋€銀行職員的兒子成為金融家的經(jīng)過，以及他在費城金融界的罪惡活動。當(dāng)柯帕烏在費城的投機欺詐正一帆風(fēng)順時，芝加哥的一場大火頓時使他陷入絕境，此后一連串的事態(tài)發(fā)展，如財政局長斯坦納因事不在市內(nèi)，使他無法籌款應(yīng)急；他出于無奈向巴特勒承認挪用公款以求得“三巨頭”的幫助；他和愛玲通奸事發(fā)等，終于造成他破產(chǎn)并鋃鐺入獄。小說通過對柯帕烏跟市財政局長斯坦納狼狽為奸、營私舞弊，為了致富和地位，不惜采取任何手段的描寫，揭示不道德的利己主義掠奪式的嘴臉，從而揭穿了資本主義的罪惡本質(zhì)。
