　　《白鯨》是梅爾維爾最杰出的作品，世界海洋文學(xué)的經(jīng)典之作。小說以第一人稱敘述：伊什梅爾受雇于“裴郭德號(hào)”出海獵鯨，老船長(zhǎng)亞哈是個(gè)狡猾老練的水手，計(jì)劃向一只前次航行中毀了他一條腿的白鯨莫比·迪克復(fù)仇。大副斯達(dá)巴克試圖說服亞哈放棄復(fù)仇的計(jì)劃，但瘋狂的老人反而脅迫他遵從命令。在尋找莫比·迪克的過程中，他們捕到了一些鯨魚。后來，他們發(fā)現(xiàn)了白鯨莫比·迪克，亞哈在與之交戰(zhàn)三晝夜后，用魚叉刺中白鯨。白鯨被激怒了，將船撞沉，船上只有伊什梅爾逃生，亞哈被標(biāo)槍繩套住了脖子而喪生，其他的成員全部遇難。這部小說具有史詩(shī)般的規(guī)模和沉郁瑰奇的文筆，通篇充滿象征。有的人認(rèn)為追殺是一種報(bào)復(fù)的象征，報(bào)復(fù)行動(dòng)的結(jié)局往往是同歸于盡；而另一種理解則認(rèn)為亞哈的追殺是一種追求，這種追求是人類的兩大追求之一，即原始的滿足本能欲望(情欲、暴力等等)的追求。
