作者簡(jiǎn)介
勞倫斯(1885-1930),英國(guó)當(dāng)代小說(shuō)家、散文家、詩(shī)人,是20世紀(jì)英國(guó)最獨(dú)特和最有爭(zhēng)議的作家,被稱(chēng)為“英國(guó)文學(xué)史上最偉大的人物之一”?! 趥愃股谥Z丁漢郡的一個(gè)煤鄉(xiāng),父親是煤礦工人,母親當(dāng)過(guò)小學(xué)教師。勞倫斯受母親影響很大,這在他一生的作品中都隱約可見(jiàn)。16歲中學(xué)畢業(yè)以后,勞倫斯棄學(xué)兩年,當(dāng)過(guò)職員和小學(xué)教師。在大學(xué)讀書(shū)時(shí),勞倫斯開(kāi)始了第一部小說(shuō)的創(chuàng)作,到1911年定名《白孔雀》出版。從此,他放棄教師職業(yè),專(zhuān)門(mén)從事創(chuàng)作?! 趥愃箤?duì)當(dāng)時(shí)英國(guó)生活中的工業(yè)化物質(zhì)文明和商業(yè)精神感到厭惡,為了逃避現(xiàn)實(shí),他一生的大部分時(shí)間是在國(guó)外度過(guò)的,先后到過(guò)意大利、澳大利亞、新西蘭、美國(guó)、墨西哥,后來(lái)在歐洲大陸過(guò)著漂泊不定的生活,于1930年因肺病在法國(guó)南部去世,享年44歲。 在近20年的創(chuàng)作生涯中,勞倫斯為世人留下了十多部小說(shuō)、三本游記、三本短篇小說(shuō)集、數(shù)本詩(shī)集、散文集、書(shū)信集。小說(shuō)代表作有《戀愛(ài)中的女人》、《查泰萊夫人的情人》、《虹》、《兒子與情人》等。

It was obvious in them too that love had gone through them: that is, the physical experience. It is curious what a subtle but unmistakable transmutation it makes, both in the body of men and women: the woman more blooming, more subtly rounded, her young angularities softened, and her expression either anxious or triumphant: the man much quieter, more inward, the very shapes of his shoulders and his buttocks less assertive, more hesitant. In the actual sex thrill within the body, the sisters nearly succumbed to the strange male power. But quickly they recovered themselves, took the sex-thrill as a sensation, and remained free. Whereas the men, in gratitude to the woman for the sex experience, let their souls go out to her. And afterwards looked rather as if they had lost a shilling and found sixpence. Connies man could be a bit sulky, and Hildas a bit jeering. But that is how men are! Ungrateful and never satisfied. When you dont have them they hate you because you wont; and when you do have them they hate you again, for some other reason. Or for no reason at all, except that they are discontented children, and cant be satisfied whatever they get, let a woman do what she may. However, came the war, Hilda and Connie were rushed home again after having been home already in May, to their mothers funeral. Before Christmas of 1914 both their German young men were dead: whereupon the sisters wept, and loved the young men passionately, but underneath forgot them. They didnt exist any more.
