前言

  傳統(tǒng)的研究生英語閱讀課本與大學(xué)英語精讀課本的結(jié)構(gòu)基本是一致的,這就體現(xiàn)不出研究生英語教學(xué)的階段性和多元性。本書從編排上對傳統(tǒng)課本進(jìn)行了大幅度的改革,在內(nèi)容上進(jìn)行了新嘗試——有效利用網(wǎng)絡(luò)資源和現(xiàn)代化的教學(xué)手段,從當(dāng)前國外網(wǎng)站上下載有教學(xué)價(jià)值的原文資料,選取一些有價(jià)值的段落或句子作為課堂問題進(jìn)行討論,或以課外練習(xí)的形式出現(xiàn),旨在從雙重環(huán)節(jié)上為學(xué)生創(chuàng)造實(shí)踐和練習(xí)的機(jī)會,力求避免教師獨(dú)占課堂、串講課文所帶來的弊端。為了方便讀者,我們把比較長的材料附在課本的第二部分(Source Section),供學(xué)生課前閱讀,而把具有課堂討論價(jià)值的語言重點(diǎn)段落安排在課本的第一部分(Course Section),同時(shí)收錄了部分補(bǔ)充閱讀材料(Supplementary Readings)。學(xué)生應(yīng)該在課前閱讀第二部分的內(nèi)容,在掌握全文大意的基礎(chǔ)上才能做好第一部分的課堂練習(xí)?! ≡摻滩脑趯W(xué)習(xí)任務(wù)的安排方面,克服了傳統(tǒng)教材千篇一律的練習(xí)題模式,而突出體現(xiàn)了教學(xué)的階段性,通過較多的既定任務(wù)幫助學(xué)生提高獨(dú)立學(xué)習(xí)和運(yùn)用語言的能力。每個(gè)單元第一項(xiàng)安排了疑難詞匯或詞組的課前查閱,讓學(xué)生自己給出它們在上下文中應(yīng)有的含義。教師針對學(xué)生在這個(gè)環(huán)節(jié)上所出現(xiàn)的問題,有的放矢地解決學(xué)生在詞匯短語方面所暴露出的問題。課上討論旨在培養(yǎng)學(xué)生的語言表達(dá)能力和概括能力。教材中還增加了對原文的翻譯練習(xí),試圖通過這個(gè)環(huán)節(jié),使學(xué)生對具有一定難度的句子或段落確立比較準(zhǔn)確、清晰的雙語聯(lián)系,避免含糊其辭、似是而非的朦朧狀態(tài),養(yǎng)成閱讀求甚解的良好習(xí)慣。寫作方面避免了常規(guī)的寫作常識的講解,寫作練習(xí)從短語結(jié)構(gòu)、段落要點(diǎn)、梗概,到短文,循序漸進(jìn),力爭更具實(shí)效性?! ∈褂帽窘滩膽?yīng)注意發(fā)揮學(xué)生的主觀能動(dòng)性,使學(xué)生逐步從教師指導(dǎo)下的自主學(xué)習(xí)過渡到完全獨(dú)立的語言學(xué)習(xí)和運(yùn)用,從而在閱讀、翻譯和寫作方面逐步提高,完善英語意識,形成較強(qiáng)的語言應(yīng)用能力。  由于編者水平所限,書中問題在所難免。為此,我們期待批評指正。

  The theory of politics which has possessed the mind of men, and which they have expressed the best they could in their laws and in their revolutions, considers persons and property as the two obiects for whose protection government exists. Of persons, all have equal rights, in virtue of being identical in nature. This interest of course with its whole power demafids a democracy. Whilst the rights of all as persons are equal, in virtue of their access to reason, their rights in property are very unequal. One man owns his clothes, and another owns a county. This accident, depending primarily on the skill and virtue of the parties, of which there is every degree, and secondarily on patrimony, falls unequally, and its rights of course are unequal. Personal rights, universally the same, demand a government framed on the ratio of the census property demands a government framed on the ratio of owners and of owning. Laban, who has flocks and herds, wishes them looked after by an officer on the frontiers, lest the Midianites shall drive them off~~ and pays a tax to that end. Jacob has no flocks or herds and no fear of the Midianites, and pays no tax to the officer. It seemed fit that Laban and Jacob should have equal rights to elect the officer who is to defend their persons, but that Laban and not Jacob should elect the officer who is to guard the sheep and cattle. And if question arise whether additional officers or watch-towers should be provided, must not Laban and Isaac, and those who must sell part of their herds to buy protection for the rest, judge better of this, and with more right, than Jacob, who, because he is a youth and a traveler, eats their bread and not his own?
