前言

  《英語閱讀高級教程》是為貫徹國家教委“加強素質教育,重視培養(yǎng)運用語言進行交際的能力,使全國外語教學在2000年上個臺階”的方針,并結合閱讀技能培養(yǎng)的新趨勢而編寫的;既可用作英語速讀訓練教材,也可作為參加大學英語六級統(tǒng)考的英語精讀教材。由于本書設置的閱讀理解練習與TOEFL、FEM、WSK、BFT等各類出國測試的習題格式相同,因此也可供學生考前強化訓練之用?! ∪珪?8個單元,36篇文章,按文章的詞數(shù)排序。每單元包括兩篇文章——TextA和TextB。每單元的A篇采選近年來的科技文獻和科技成果報告;B篇采選有關文化、教育、歷史、風俗習慣、心理、環(huán)境保護等不同體裁的熱門話題,文章語言地道、流暢,多為80年代后期到9O年代初期的新作。所選文章集趣味性、知識性、哲理性于一體,并在語文和體裁兩方面,五谷雜糧、各種營養(yǎng)“齊備”——既有顯示作家文才縱橫的經典作品,也有富于時代氣息的現(xiàn)代英語。豐富的內容給讀者提供大量的語言共核(1anguagecore),使興趣各異的理工科和文科學生既雅俗共賞,也可汲取各種不同的營養(yǎng)。  本書為每篇課文編排的練習包括:1)讀前準備;2)在上下文情景中猜測課文生詞詞義;3)有關閱讀技巧、修辭、寫作方面的知識;4)閱讀理解——共四部分,著眼于語篇水平教學,著手于句子水平訓練,先見林后見樹,既見林又見樹。努力引導學生克服在閱讀英文篇章時仍存在的一遇到難詞就查字典的陋習和只停留在單句表層語意的理解和句子語法結構的積弊,有意識地訓練學生按照每課的Sug—gestedReadingTime在規(guī)定時間內讀完全篇課文,歸納中心意思,以培養(yǎng)直接從英語報刊、書籍吸取專業(yè)所需最新信息所必備的語篇理解能力?! ∽?996年起,大學英語四、六級全國統(tǒng)一考試中閱讀理解部分已進行改革,采用新題型,以減少自7O年代以來流行于國內外標準化測試中答案封閉的多項選擇題所顯示的負面效應,加強學生智力、想象力、創(chuàng)造力三種能力的培養(yǎng)。為體現(xiàn)這一“新”精神,本書注意了配套習題形式的多樣化,部分采用了浙江大學外語系SAQ課題組新設計的答案開放式的綜合性練習形式:1)完成句子題(SentenceCompletion);2)問答題(QuestionandAnswer);3)摘要完形題(SummaryCloze);4)句子完形題(Gapped’rext)。上述新穎的題型,使學生對課文中出現(xiàn)的單詞、詞組、習慣用語和句型自然吸收、消化,并將“讀”與“寫”的技能有機地結合起來。  《英語閱讀高級教程》適用于高級英語學習愛好者。全書生詞量為2000詞左右,覆蓋非英語專業(yè)研究生(碩士生、博士生)英語教學大綱的基本詞匯。全書總閱讀量為50000詞左右,需36學時左右學完。書后附有練習答案及總詞匯表,便于讀者查閱。本書在浙江大學博士生英語教學中作為閱讀課教材使用多年,收到良好的教學效果。  本書在編寫過程中得到浙江大學研究生院及外語系領導的大力支持。外語系張振中教授和應惠蘭教授對該書的體例設計、習題形式提出許多寶貴意見,并給予極大的關注。全書經美籍英語語言文學專家Prof.WilliamAho和英籍訓練教師專家Brianw.Tanner審閱。我們在此謹向他們表示誠摯的感謝?! ∮捎诰幷咚接邢?,謬誤疏漏之處在所難免,敬請廣大讀者及同行專家不吝賜教。

  Thinking it over, 1 decided that a jerk is basically a person without insight. He is not necessarily a fool or a dope, because some extremely clever persons can be jerks. In fact, it has little to do with intelligence as we commonly think of it ; it is, rather, a kind of subtle but persuasive aroma emanating from the inner part of the personality.  1 know a college president who can be described only as a jerk.
