Bibliography
章節(jié)摘錄
版權(quán)頁:This dissertation deals with Cather's ecological vision embodied in her painstakingly constructed patterns of existence which I group into three"worlds". The World of Edenic Paradise, The World of Paradise Lost, and The World of Paradise Regained.Once celebrated as a writer who creates strong women characters in vast prairie settings and depicts the resilience of the American immigrant farmers, Willa Cather is best known for her west frntier plains fic-tion. Her fiction is often concerned with the representation of the psy-chological process of the self, as it connects and interacts with the envi-ronment, and the relationship between humanity and nature is a domi-nant and recurring theme in these writings. While her early short stories often deal with themes of man against the harsh land, her mature works thereafter, without glossing over the severity of farm life, reveal a har-mony between the land and those who live on it and love it. With seem-ingly inborn intuition, her protagonists respect the land, place faith on the land, and thus thrive together with their land. 0 Pioneers ! is consid-ered to be the first novel of Cather in her full maturity as a writ-er. Behind a legend of success of its heroine is a harmonious bond be-tween humans and the land. The harmony continues and consummates in another prairie novel, My Antonia. James Woodress contends that in My Antonia Cather has not only succeeded in giving significance to the American pioneering experience, but she also ties her story to humani-ty's primitive relationship with the earth. They achieve their self-reali-zation in the symbiotic interconnection with the wilderness, the primi-tive nature. This is a version of the World of Edenic Paradise, where hu-mans"dwell poetically" on the earth.
