前言

　　詹姆斯·喬伊斯（James Joyce，1882-1941），愛爾蘭著名作家，詩人，20世紀最偉大的作家之一?！　?882年2月2日喬伊斯出生在愛爾蘭首都都柏林。他的父親是一位堅定的民族主義者，母親則是虔誠的天主教徒。喬伊斯出生的時候，愛爾蘭是英國的殖民地。他從小就在教會學校接受教育，學習成績出眾，并初步顯露出音樂、宗教哲學及語言文學方面的才能。1898年，喬伊斯進入都柏林大學學習哲學和語言學，1902年6月獲現(xiàn)代語學士學位。1904年起，他開始了長及一生的流亡生涯，先后在法國、瑞士、意大利過著流離的生活，期間多以教授英語和為報刊撰稿糊口。除短期回鄉(xiāng)探親外，1911年后他便再也不曾踏上愛爾蘭的土地。在遠離祖國期間，他廣泛地吸取歐洲大陸和世界文化的精華；他諳熟歐洲大陸作家作品，受易卜生影響尤深，并漸漸表現(xiàn)出對人類精神世界特殊的感悟及對家庭篤信的宗教和自己生活環(huán)境中的習俗、傳統(tǒng)的叛逆。喬伊斯對文學矢志不渝，勤奮寫作，終成一代巨匠。他寫過詩和劇本，而使他名揚世界的是小說，其代表作有短篇小說集《都柏林人》(1914)、長篇小說《一個青年藝術家的畫像》(1916)、《尤利西斯》(1922)和《芬尼根守靈》(1939)。其小說創(chuàng)作對現(xiàn)代主義文學影響巨大，是20世紀現(xiàn)代主義文學和西方文化傳統(tǒng)之間傳承與流變的一個杰出典范。喬伊斯作品的意識流技巧、揶揄風格、文字的暗示性和神話結構，既描畫出平凡瑣碎的微觀世界，也展示了人性歷史文化社會等宏觀世界。1941年1月13日，喬伊斯在瑞士蘇黎世去世?！　〗粋€世紀以來，喬伊斯的作品先后被譯成世界上幾十種語言，擁有世界各地無數(shù)的忠實讀者。在中國，喬伊斯的作品同樣是廣大讀者喜愛的世界經(jīng)典小說之一。基于這個原因，我們決定編譯喬伊斯作品中的經(jīng)典，其中包括短篇小說集《都柏林人》和長篇小說《一個青年藝術家的畫像》，并采用中文導讀英文版的形式出版。　　在中文導讀中，我們盡力使其貼近原作的精髓，也盡可能保留原作的敘述主線。我們希望能夠編出為當代中國讀者所喜愛的經(jīng)典讀本。讀者在閱讀英文文本之前，可以先閱讀中文導讀部分，這樣有利于了解故事背景，從而加快閱讀速度。我們相信，該經(jīng)典著作的引進對加強當代中國讀者，特別是青少年讀者的科學素養(yǎng)和人文修養(yǎng)是非常有幫助的?！　　?/pre>

　　On Sundays Stephen with his father and his grand-uncle took their constitutional. The old man was a nimble walker in spite of his corns and often ten or twelve miles of the road were covered. The little village of Stillorgan was the parting of the ways. Either they went to the left towards the Dublin mountains or along the Goatstown road and thence into Dundrum, coming home by Sandyford. Trudging along the road or standing in some grimy wayside public house his elders spoke constantly of the subjects nearer their hearts, of Irish politics, of Munster and of the legends of their own family, to all of which Stephen lent an avid ear. Words which he did not understand he said over and over to himself till he had learnt them by heart: and through them he had glimpses of the real world about them. The hour when he too would take part in the life of that world seemed drawing near and in secret he began to make ready for the great part which he felt awaited him the nature ofwhich he only dimly apprehended.　　His evenings were his own; and he pored over a ragged translation of THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO. The figure of that dark avenger stood forth in his mind for whatever he had heard or divined in childhood of the strange and terrible. At night he built up on the parlour table an image of the wonderfulisland cave out of transfers and paper flowers and coloured tissue paper and strips of the silver and golden paper in which chocolate is wrapped. When he had broken up this scenery, weary ofits tinsel, there would come to his mind the bright picture of Marseille, of sunny trellises, and of Mercedes.　　Outside Blackrock, on the road that led to the mountains, stood a small whitewashed house in the garden of which grew many rosebushes: and in this house, he told himself, another Mercedes lived.
