內(nèi)容概要

　　教授經(jīng)濟學的主要目的是培養(yǎng)更好的國民。學習經(jīng)濟學以后，學生可以在讀書看報時更好地理解各類新聞，在生活中更好地進行決策，在選舉站前更好地作出選擇。N.格雷戈里·曼昆編著的的《經(jīng)濟學原理（宏觀部分第4版英文版）》一書在向下一代傳達這些思維方式和洞察力時發(fā)揮了一定的作用。這本書自1997年首次出版以來，已經(jīng)被全世界100多萬學生使用，并且已經(jīng)被翻譯成20種語言。這本書強調(diào)應用而非正規(guī)的經(jīng)濟理論，強調(diào)直觀的理解而非數(shù)學推導，采用大型圖表說明而非關注細枝末節(jié)。它試圖讓學生感受到我們作為職業(yè)經(jīng)濟學家的使命和激情。

作者簡介

作者：（美國）N.格雷戈里·曼昆（N.Gregory Mankiw）  N.格雷戈里·曼昆（N.Gregory Mankiw），哈佛大學經(jīng)濟學教授。作為學生，他曾在普林斯頓大學和麻省理工學院學習經(jīng)濟學；作為教師，他講授過宏觀經(jīng)濟學、微觀經(jīng)濟學、統(tǒng)計學和經(jīng)濟學原理。多年前他甚至還在長灘島當過一個夏季的帆船運動教練。曼昆教授是一位高產(chǎn)的學者和一位學術與政治爭論的經(jīng)常參與者。他的著作發(fā)表在《美國經(jīng)濟評論》（American Economic Review）、《政治經(jīng)濟學雜志》（Journal of Political Economy）和《經(jīng)濟學季刊》（Quarterly Journal of Economics）等學術雜志，以及《紐約時報》（The New YorkTimes）、《金融時報》（The Financial Times）、《華爾街日報》（The Wall Street Journal）和《財富》（Fortune）等熱門報刊上。他也是最暢銷的中級經(jīng)濟學教科書《宏觀經(jīng)濟學》（WorthPublishers出版）的作者。除了教學、研究和寫作之外，曼昆教授還是美國國家經(jīng)濟研究局的合作研究人員、波士頓聯(lián)邦儲備銀行和國會預算辦公室的顧問，以及ETS考試研發(fā)委員會下設的經(jīng)濟學高級水平考試委員會成員。從2003年到2005年，他擔任總統(tǒng)經(jīng)濟顧問委員會主席。

版權頁：   插圖：   One government program that increases the amount of frictional unemployment, without intending to do so, is unemployment insurance. This program is designed to offer workers partial protection against job loss. The unemployed who quit their jobs, were fired for cause, or just entered the labor force are not eligible. Benefits are paid only to the unemployed who were laid off because their previous employers no longer needed their skills. Although the terms of the program vary over time and across states, a typical American worker covered by unemployment insurance receives 50 percent of his or her former wages for 26 weeks. While unemployment insurance reduces the hardship of unemployment, it also increases the amount of unemployment. The explanation is based on one of the Ten Principles of Economics in Chapter 1: People respond to incentives. Because unemployment benefits stop when a worker takes a new job, the unemployed devote less effort to job search and are more likely to turn down unattractive job offers. In addition, because unemployment insurance makes unemployment less onerous, workers are less likely to seek guarantees of job security when they negotiate with employers over the terms of employment.
