弗蘭肯斯坦

前言

瑪麗·雪萊（MaryShelley，1797-1851），英國著名小說家，被譽為“科幻小說之母”。她于1797年8月30日生于倫敦的一個聲望顯赫的家庭，父親威廉·戈德溫是英國著名哲學家、小說家，母親瑪莉·渥斯頓克雷福特是英國著名女權主義者、教育家和作家?，旣悺ぱ┤R是英國十九世紀上半葉著名的浪漫主義派詩人波西·比?！ぱ┤R（PercyByssheShelley，1792-1822）的第二任妻子。1818年，她出版了第一部作品《弗蘭肯斯坦》，這是英國文學史上最早的科幻小說之一，也被譽為“有史以來最偉大的恐怖作品之一”。該書一經(jīng)出版便受到廣泛歡迎，成為當時最暢銷的小說之一，為瑪麗贏得了極高的聲譽。同時該作品還成為當時社會輿論的熱點，引發(fā)了社會各界、特別是科學界的廣泛爭論。該作品至今已被譯成幾十種文字，并曾經(jīng)先后多次被改編成電影、電視和電腦游戲等。除此之外，她還出版了小說《最后一個人》、散文等，收集、整理和出版了丈夫雪萊的詩集、書信集、散文和其他作品集?！陡ヌm肯斯坦》是一部以哥特式傳統(tǒng)創(chuàng)作的感傷主義文學作品，是西方第一部真正意義上的科幻小說。同時“弗蘭肯斯坦”已成為好萊塢經(jīng)典的形象之一，小說中的怪物形象也成為萬圣節(jié)流行的、家喻戶曉的面具圖像。時至今日，該書仍然擁有大批世界范圍內的讀者，依然在英國乃至世界科幻文學史上占有重要地位。在中國，《弗蘭肯斯坦》同樣是最受廣大青少年讀者歡迎的經(jīng)典小說之一。目前，在國內數(shù)量眾多的《弗蘭肯斯坦》書籍中，主要的出版形式有兩種：一種是中文翻譯版，另一種是中英文對照版。而其中的中英文對照讀本比較受讀者的歡迎，這主要是得益于中國人熱衷于學習英文的大環(huán)境。從英文學習的角度來看，直接使用純英文的學習資料更有利于英語學習。

內容概要

Frankenstein，中文譯名為《弗蘭肯斯坦》，也譯《科學怪人》，由英國著名作家瑪麗·雪萊編著。主人公弗蘭肯斯坦是位從事生命科學研究的青年學者，他希望用人工的方法創(chuàng)造生命。經(jīng)過無數(shù)次的實驗，他終于利用人的骨骼和動物的器官造出了一個智慧生命——一個巨人。除長相猙獰、體形巨大之外，巨人與普通人相差無幾，他也有喜怒哀樂、七情六欲。由于對巨人的丑陋有厭惡感，巨人一有生命就被弗蘭肯斯坦拋棄了。巨人到處流浪，起初他對人充滿了善意和感恩之情。由于其無比丑陋的外貌，人們把他看成怪物，沒人愿意與他交朋友。盛怒之下，巨人決定報復弗蘭肯斯坦，他認為弗蘭肯斯坦既然給了他生命就不應該將他拋棄。他先殺死了弗蘭肯斯坦的弟弟，卻嫁禍于他人。作為不再報復的條件，他請求弗蘭肯斯坦為他造出一個配偶。在遭到拒絕后，他殺死了弗蘭肯斯坦的朋友，然后又在弗蘭肯斯坦的新婚之夜殺死了他的妻子伊麗莎白。弗蘭肯斯坦懷著滿腔怒火追捕怪物巨人。最終弗蘭肯斯坦心力交瘁死在復仇的路上，而怪物巨人也因悔恨自己的所作所為而準血自殺身亡。    該書一經(jīng)出版，很快就成為當時最受關注和最暢銷的小說，至今已被譯成幾十種文字，并曾經(jīng)先后多次被改編成電影、電視和電腦游戲等。書中所展現(xiàn)的科幻故事伴隨了一代又一代人的美麗童年、少年直至成年。無論作為語言學習的課本，還是作為通俗的文學讀本，本書對當代中國的青少年都將產(chǎn)生積極的影響。為了使讀者能夠了解英文故事概況，進而提高閱讀速度和閱讀水平，在每章的開始部分增加了中文導讀。

'The words induced me to turn towards myself. I leamed that the possessions most esteemed by your fellow creatures were, high and unsullied descent united with riches. A man might be respected with only one of these advantages; but without either he was considered, except in very rare instances, as a vagabond and a slave, doomed to waste his powers for the profits of the chosen few！ And what was I？ Of my creation and creator I was absolutely ignorant, but I knew that I possessed no money, no friends, no kind of property. I was, besides, endued with a figure hideously deformed and loathsome; I was not even of the same nature as man.
