新世紀(jì)之初,我國(guó)的大學(xué)英語(yǔ)教學(xué)正面臨著一個(gè)新的起點(diǎn):提升英語(yǔ)聽說(shuō)能力,走向英語(yǔ)實(shí)際運(yùn)用。這是一個(gè)立足于社會(huì)現(xiàn)實(shí),尊重語(yǔ)言社會(huì)功能的學(xué)習(xí)視界。知識(shí),經(jīng)濟(jì)的到來(lái),信息社會(huì)的產(chǎn)生,全球化的趨勢(shì),多元文化的共存,這些人類現(xiàn)象共同構(gòu)筑了我們今天的社會(huì)現(xiàn)實(shí),而英語(yǔ)作為國(guó)際通用語(yǔ)言,正是一個(gè)國(guó)家或個(gè)人有效地參與國(guó)際競(jìng)爭(zhēng)和文化交往的重要工具。而最能表現(xiàn)語(yǔ)言的工具性質(zhì)的,莫過(guò)于在語(yǔ)言的實(shí)際運(yùn)用過(guò)程中了?! ∮⒄Z(yǔ)教材的不斷更新和建設(shè)歷來(lái)都是促進(jìn)大學(xué)英語(yǔ)教學(xué)改革,提高教學(xué)質(zhì)量的先行任務(wù)。目前,教育部和全國(guó)高校外語(yǔ)教學(xué)指導(dǎo)委員會(huì)堅(jiān)定推行大學(xué)英語(yǔ)教學(xué)改革,制定頒布了新時(shí)期的《大學(xué)英語(yǔ)課程教學(xué)要求》,為新的大學(xué)英語(yǔ)教材的編寫提供了指導(dǎo)依據(jù),同時(shí)也顯示了編寫新的大學(xué)英語(yǔ)教材的必要性和緊迫性。正是在此情勢(shì)下,北京大學(xué)教材建設(shè)委員會(huì)重點(diǎn)立項(xiàng)“大學(xué)英語(yǔ)”教材建設(shè),北京大學(xué)出版社具體組織、策劃了本套“大學(xué)英語(yǔ)立體化網(wǎng)絡(luò)化系列教材”的編寫和出版工作?! ”咎捉滩谋辉u(píng)為普通高等教育“十一五”國(guó)家級(jí)規(guī)劃教材,根據(jù)《大學(xué)英語(yǔ)課程教學(xué)要求》,我們又在原書基礎(chǔ)上進(jìn)行了修訂。

Dinosaur——the common name was given to a group ofreptiles, often very large, that first appeared in the LateTriassic Period about 215 million years ago and thrivedworldwide for some 150 million years. Most died out by the end of the CretaceousPeriod, about 65 million years ago, but many lines of evidence now show that onelineage evolved into birds about 150 million years ago.The name dinosaur comes from the Greek words deinos (terrible or fearfullygreat) and sauros (reptile or lizard). The English anatomist Richard Owenproposed the formal term Dinosauria in 1842 to include three giant extinct animals(Megalosaurus, Iguanodon, and Hylaeosaurus) represented by large fossilized bonesthat had been unearthed at several locations in southern England during the earlypart of the 19th century. Owen recognized that these reptiles were far different fromother known reptiles of the present and the past for three reasons: they were largeyet obviously terrestrial, unlike the aquatic ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs that werealready known; they had five vertebrae in their hips, whereas most known reptileshave only two; and, rather than holding their limbs sprawled out to the side in themanner of lizards, dinosaurs held their limbs under the body in columnar fashion,like elephants and other large mammals.
