前言

  新世紀(jì)之初,我國(guó)的大學(xué)英語(yǔ)教學(xué)正面臨著一個(gè)新的起點(diǎn):提升英語(yǔ)聽(tīng)說(shuō)能力,走向英語(yǔ)實(shí)際運(yùn)用。這是一個(gè)立足于社會(huì)現(xiàn)實(shí),尊重語(yǔ)言社會(huì)功能的學(xué)習(xí)視界。知識(shí)經(jīng)濟(jì)的到來(lái),信息社會(huì)的產(chǎn)生,全球化的趨勢(shì),多元文化的共存,這些人類(lèi)現(xiàn)象共同構(gòu)筑了我們今天的社會(huì)現(xiàn)實(shí),而英語(yǔ)作為國(guó)際通用語(yǔ)言.正是一個(gè)國(guó)家或個(gè)人有效地參與國(guó)際競(jìng)爭(zhēng)和文化交往的重要工具。而最能表現(xiàn)語(yǔ)言的工具性質(zhì)的,莫過(guò)于在語(yǔ)言的實(shí)際運(yùn)用過(guò)程中了?! ∮⒄Z(yǔ)教材的不斷更新和建設(shè)歷來(lái)都是促進(jìn)大學(xué)英語(yǔ)教學(xué)改革.提高教學(xué)質(zhì)量的先行任務(wù)。目前,國(guó)家教育部和全國(guó)高校外語(yǔ)教學(xué)指導(dǎo)委員會(huì)堅(jiān)定推行大學(xué)英語(yǔ)教學(xué)改革,制定頒布了新時(shí)期的《大學(xué)英語(yǔ)課程教學(xué)要求》,為新的大學(xué)英語(yǔ)教材的編寫(xiě)提供了指導(dǎo)依據(jù),同時(shí)也顯示了編寫(xiě)新的大學(xué)英語(yǔ)教材的必要性和緊迫性。正是在此情勢(shì)下,北京大學(xué)教材建設(shè)委員會(huì)重點(diǎn)立項(xiàng)“大學(xué)英語(yǔ)”教材建設(shè).北京大學(xué)出版社具體組織、策劃了本套“大學(xué)英語(yǔ)立體化網(wǎng)絡(luò)化系列教材”的編寫(xiě)和出版工作。  本套教材被評(píng)為普通高等教育“十一五”國(guó)家級(jí)規(guī)劃教材,根據(jù)《大學(xué)英語(yǔ)課程教學(xué)要求》,我們又在原書(shū)基礎(chǔ)上進(jìn)行了修訂?! ”本┐髮W(xué)教材建設(shè)委員會(huì)將本套教材列為重點(diǎn)教材建設(shè)項(xiàng)目,重點(diǎn)支持。我國(guó)英語(yǔ)教學(xué)研究權(quán)威李賦寧教授、胡壯麟教授擔(dān)任本套教材總顧問(wèn).北京大學(xué)英語(yǔ)系黃必康教授任總主編,中國(guó)農(nóng)業(yè)大學(xué)外語(yǔ)系李建華教授任網(wǎng)絡(luò)版主編。  編寫(xiě)過(guò)程中我們也得到了各主編所在院校的大力支持和配合。得到了北京大學(xué)、北京師范大學(xué)、北京航空航天大學(xué)、中國(guó)農(nóng)業(yè)大學(xué)、復(fù)旦大學(xué)、南京大學(xué)、北京交通大學(xué)、中山大學(xué)、吉林大學(xué)、東南大學(xué)、大連理工大學(xué)、華南理工大學(xué)、東北大學(xué)、四川大學(xué)、重慶大學(xué)、云南大學(xué)、河北師范大學(xué)、西安電子科技大學(xué)、山東農(nóng)業(yè)大學(xué)、山東青年管理干部學(xué)院、淮南師范學(xué)院、江西財(cái)經(jīng)大學(xué)、西北大學(xué)、福州大學(xué)等院校數(shù)十位專(zhuān)家教授的關(guān)注和支持,對(duì)此我們深表謝忱。我們也特別感謝本系列教材幾十位中外英語(yǔ)教學(xué)專(zhuān)家在編寫(xiě)過(guò)程中認(rèn)真細(xì)致,富有成效的工作!  中國(guó)大學(xué)英語(yǔ)改革任重道遠(yuǎn),大學(xué)英語(yǔ)教材建設(shè)未有止境。本套大學(xué)英語(yǔ)系列教材既循改革步伐,探索教學(xué)新路,缺點(diǎn)與不足乃至謬誤之處在所難免。衷心希望得到專(zhuān)家學(xué)者的批評(píng)指正,聽(tīng)到廣大師生的改進(jìn)意見(jiàn)。

  My name is Tuba Kambriz. I came here from Afghanistan five years ago. My husbandhad to come here for business so my whole family moved here. Right now, we donthave enough money to pay the bills, so my goal is to get a job to help my husbandwith money. But I have an obstacle——time. It will be difficult to work because I haveto take care of the children and the house. One solution is to work part-time while mychildren are in school. Another solution is to have my mother help out around thehouse and help take care of the children. If we all work together, we will achieve ourgoals.  Im Lam and I came to the United States from Vietnam many years ago. I was apolitical prisoner during the Vietnam War and now I m happy to be safe in Americawith my family. The most important people in my life are my grandchildren. My goalis to send my grandchildren to college. But there is an obstacle. We dont have enoughmoney to send them to college. I want them to have the education I never did, so Ithink its very important for them to go to school. My wife thought of one solution.She suggests they apply for scholarships. This is a good idea because both girls are verysmart: The girls came up with another solution. They said they could work part-time whilegoing to school. We have been saving every penny we can to help them. I hope everythingworks out in the end.
