前言

  新世紀之初,我國的大學英語教學正面臨著一個新的起點:提升英語聽說能力,走向英語實際運用。這是一個立足于社會現(xiàn)實,尊重語言社會功能的學習視界。知識經(jīng)濟的到來,信息社會的產(chǎn)生,全球化的趨勢,多元文化的共存,這些人類現(xiàn)象共同構筑了我們今天的社會現(xiàn)實,而英語作為國際通用語言.正是一個國家或個人有效地參與國際競爭和文化交往的重要工具。而最能表現(xiàn)語言的工具性質的,莫過于在語言的實際運用過程中了?! ∮⒄Z教材的不斷更新和建設歷來都是促進大學英語教學改革.提高教學質量的先行任務。目前,國家教育部和全國高校外語教學指導委員會堅定推行大學英語教學改革,制定頒布了新時期的《大學英語課程教學要求》,為新的大學英語教材的編寫提供了指導依據(jù),同時也顯示了編寫新的大學英語教材的必要性和緊迫性。正是在此情勢下,北京大學教材建設委員會重點立項“大學英語”教材建設.北京大學出版社具體組織、策劃了本套“大學英語立體化網(wǎng)絡化系列教材”的編寫和出版工作?! ”咎捉滩谋辉u為普通高等教育“十一五”國家級規(guī)劃教材,根據(jù)《大學英語課程教學要求》,我們又在原書基礎上進行了修訂?! ”本┐髮W教材建設委員會將本套教材列為重點教材建設項目,重點支持。我國英語教學研究權威李賦寧教授、胡壯麟教授擔任本套教材總顧問.北京大學英語系黃必康教授任總主編,中國農業(yè)大學外語系李建華教授任網(wǎng)絡版主編。  編寫過程中我們也得到了各主編所在院校的大力支持和配合。得到了北京大學、北京師范大學、北京航空航天大學、中國農業(yè)大學、復旦大學、南京大學、北京交通大學、中山大學、吉林大學、東南大學、大連理工大學、華南理工大學、東北大學、四川大學、重慶大學、云南大學、河北師范大學、西安電子科技大學、山東農業(yè)大學、山東青年管理干部學院、淮南師范學院、江西財經(jīng)大學、西北大學、福州大學等院校數(shù)十位專家教授的關注和支持,對此我們深表謝忱。我們也特別感謝本系列教材幾十位中外英語教學專家在編寫過程中認真細致,富有成效的工作!  中國大學英語改革任重道遠,大學英語教材建設未有止境。本套大學英語系列教材既循改革步伐,探索教學新路,缺點與不足乃至謬誤之處在所難免。衷心希望得到專家學者的批評指正,聽到廣大師生的改進意見。

  My name is Tuba Kambriz. I came here from Afghanistan five years ago. My husbandhad to come here for business so my whole family moved here. Right now, we donthave enough money to pay the bills, so my goal is to get a job to help my husbandwith money. But I have an obstacle——time. It will be difficult to work because I haveto take care of the children and the house. One solution is to work part-time while mychildren are in school. Another solution is to have my mother help out around thehouse and help take care of the children. If we all work together, we will achieve ourgoals.  Im Lam and I came to the United States from Vietnam many years ago. I was apolitical prisoner during the Vietnam War and now I m happy to be safe in Americawith my family. The most important people in my life are my grandchildren. My goalis to send my grandchildren to college. But there is an obstacle. We dont have enoughmoney to send them to college. I want them to have the education I never did, so Ithink its very important for them to go to school. My wife thought of one solution.She suggests they apply for scholarships. This is a good idea because both girls are verysmart: The girls came up with another solution. They said they could work part-time whilegoing to school. We have been saving every penny we can to help them. I hope everythingworks out in the end.
