　　21世紀(jì)英語的作用　　當(dāng)今的世界處于社會、經(jīng)濟(jì)和人口變遷的不同階段。過去的幾年中，世界在經(jīng)濟(jì)和政治方面的變化要比1945年以來的任何時(shí)期都快。新興的全球經(jīng)濟(jì)既有競爭性又相互依存，這昭示著在世界的大部分地區(qū)實(shí)施現(xiàn)代通信和生產(chǎn)技術(shù)是行得通的。這么說，我們需要關(guān)心21世紀(jì)英語的發(fā)展嗎?據(jù)《經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)家雜志》（1996）預(yù)測，英語繼續(xù)是世界標(biāo)準(zhǔn)語，英語自身及其在世界上的普及地位沒有受到什么大的威脅。但變化是無止境的?！　H經(jīng)濟(jì)　　兩種因素推動了這個(gè)全球市場。第一，許多制造產(chǎn)品有一個(gè)或多個(gè)進(jìn)口部件。福特汽車和IBM計(jì)算機(jī)就是兩個(gè)典型例證。第二，各國政府定為對外貿(mào)易的進(jìn)出口貨物中，半數(shù)以上是在國內(nèi)公司與他們的國外分公司之間交易的。　　為什么在討論英語問題時(shí)談?wù)撌裁唇?jīng)濟(jì)?因?yàn)橛⒄Z與這種經(jīng)濟(jì)現(xiàn)代化和工業(yè)發(fā)展息息相關(guān)?！　⌒畔⒌陌l(fā)送和接收都在提速。各國政府、各種產(chǎn)業(yè)和國內(nèi)及跨國公司為了技術(shù)進(jìn)步的競爭需要，必須精通這些技術(shù)的載體語言——英語。　　英語的擴(kuò)張　　過去40年中，英語在全球的擴(kuò)張令人嘆為觀止。英語在幾個(gè)方面創(chuàng)下了史無前例的記錄：日益增加的語言使用人數(shù)；在各個(gè)社會內(nèi)部滲透的深度；使用的范圍。　　全世界有超過14億的人生活在以英語為官方語言的國家中。世界人口中，每5個(gè)人就有1個(gè)人在某種程度上有講英語的能力。到達(dá)2000年，每5個(gè)人不懂英語的人中還將有1個(gè)人學(xué)習(xí)英語——超過10億人。世界上70％以上的科學(xué)家懂英語。全世界約有85％的郵件用英語書寫。世界電子檢索系統(tǒng)中90％的信息用英語存儲。到2010年，以英語為第二語言或外語的人數(shù)將超過以英語為母語的人數(shù)。這種趨勢肯定會影響到英語自身。
