本書第一版于1980年出版。由于它首次成功地將城市方言（社會語言學(xué)）、方言地理學(xué)和空間變異組合進一個連續(xù)的、統(tǒng)一的理論原則之下，從而在西方語言學(xué)界取得了突破性的成就。本書是第二版，作者增補了最近20年來在方言研究領(lǐng)域取得的新成就，并給出了專門的章節(jié)介紹方言學(xué)的“量化分析”和方言變體的圖表化。
    本書的最大優(yōu)點是在短短的篇幅中將本研究領(lǐng)域中的理論方法、理論模型和新的發(fā)現(xiàn)成功地結(jié)合在一起。
