版權頁:插圖:The sensitivity of popular culture to social change contributes to its ephemeraland transient character, and has promoted various conceptualizations andmethodological approaches to the phenomenon. In the 1950s, Richard Hoggart,Raymond Williams and others extended the serious analysis of culture and thequestion of aesthetics to include everyday visual, stylistic and material reflectionsof the experience of ordinary people and their response to real or imaginedstructural subordination.Popular culture has since become understood in terms of active processes andpractices as well as objects and artifacts, and encompasses a variety of phenomenaincluding mail order catalogues, the design of cars and other consumer durables,clothes, food fashions, football matches, videotapes, Christmas, etc. It has beensuggested that popular culture has the capacity to subvert, yen invert (Burkecites the historical function of the carnival to "turn the world upside down") theestablished hegemonic order. Cultural elitists have traditionally criticized andattempted to neutralize or improve the culture and lifestyle of the masses.
