版權頁：Originally, Old English poems are mainly alliterative verses with few variations.Chaucer introduced from France the rhymed stanzas of various types to Englishpoetry to replace it. In The Romaunt of the Rose, he first introduced to English theoctosyllabic couplet. In The Legend of Good Women, he used for the first time inEnglish heroic couplet. And in his masterpiece, The Canterbury Tales, he employedheroic couplet with true ease and charm for the first time in the history of Englishliterature.Besides this, though he drew influence from French, Italian, and Latin models, heis the first great poet who wrote in the current English language. His productionof so much excellent poetry was an important factor in establishing English as theliterary language of the country. And he made the dialect of London the foundationfor Modem English speech. Small wonder latter-day writer, John Drydon wouldcall him the Father of English Poetry.
