　　One general principle of linguistic analysis is the primacy of speech over writing.　Speech isconsidered as the primary medium of language for several reasons. First， speech is prior to writinghistorically：speech existed long， long before writing systems came into being. Second， genetically，children always learn to speak before they learn to write. Third， the primacy of speech can also beseen in the forms that writing systems use. The written forms represent the individual sounds， such asEnglish and French， which are called alphabetic writing.　Some written forms represent syllablessuch as Japanese， which is called syllabic writing.　Others represent individual words like theChinese writing system， which is called logographic writing.　　While writing gives language new scope and uses that speech does not have.　First， withwriting， messages can be carried through space.　Second， with writing， messages can be carriedthrough time. Third， written messages are not subject to distortion. In a word， speech is believed tobe more representative of human language than writing.
