章節(jié)摘錄
For example, take the case of Guo Meimei. This 20-year-old has gone from being unknown to having tens of thousands of followers overnight, thanks to her posts on Sin amicro blog which showed her extravagant lifestyle. What irritated many Internet users was that she was allegedly linked to the Red Cross Society of China. They questioned whether Guo had financed her lifestyle out of money donated to the society. The Red Cross society quickly denied any connection with Guo. But, this didn't stop Internet users digging for the inside story. Faced with increasing online anger, Guo admitted on her micro blog on June 26 that her relationship with the Red Cross was made up. She apologized for her behavior. "It is pure show. The whole affair seems like a stunt to gain media attention," Zhao Zizhong, a professor at the Communication University of China, told China Daily. Zhang added that the ease with which you can create and share information on micro blogs has raised concerns about misinformation, either accidental or intentional. Twitter, the popular American social-networking service, shares this concern about credibility. Last November, a fake tsunami warning posted on an official government Twitter account caused panic in Indonesia. The warning turned out to be posted by a hacker who had hijacked the government account. It prompted people to ask whether micro blogs are credible news sources. Yahoo researchers have tracked the spread of news through Twitter. They found that it's possible to create an automated system which identifies hot topics. It can judge their reliability with an accuracy of nearly 90percent. "But to assess credibility is not simply an academic exercise," Lauren Dugan, one of the researchers, told the New York Times. Dugan said to identify details, their research team turned to real, live humans because "there's no better way, yet". In China, a similar team is called a "rumor-sweeping" group. Tan Chao is a member of Sin as "rumor-sweeping" group. Along with six colleagues, his job is to identify hot topics on Sin a micro blogs, check on them and clarify them if the yap pear to be rumors. "The spread of misinformation easily gets out of control, and Internet users can get irrational, "Tan said. "We're here to make sure that news on micro blogs is as credible as possible and to prevent people from falling into traps." Anger rises as further cuts hit Greece Greece approved painful new austerity measures last week despite riots and protests. The action was taken in a desperate bid to avoid national bankruptcy. Austerity measures are measures passed by a government to reduce the amount it spends or to discourage people from spending. In this case, what Greek politicians decided on was a program of cuts aimed at reducing the country's giant budget deficit. The budget deficit is the difference between what the government raises in taxes and what it spends. Greece's debts amount to more than 140 percent of its GDP(gross domestic product). Since 2009, the European Union and International Monetary Fund have been lending money to prevent Greece from going bust. But recently, they demanded that the Greek government impose further tax rises, sell off state companies and cut spending to show that Greece was serious about reforming its economy. These reforms will mean increased taxes and sharp hikes in fuel, alcohol and tobacco prices. Spending cuts will see heavy public sector job losses, school closures and restrictions on welfare benefits. ……
