作者簡介

　　Nick Stirk，英國人，畢業(yè)于英國貝爾法斯特大學(xué)和劍橋大學(xué)；先后在北京大學(xué)、清華大學(xué)、中國人民大學(xué)和北京語言文化大學(xué)講授研究生口語與寫作課程；曾在臺灣地區(qū)和韓國講授從高中到研究生的英語課程；在中國大陸參與編寫多部英語教材。

　　The World Is a Big Place　　My parents want me to move back to my hometown after graduation, but I do not want to. The world is a big place and I would like to see more of it.　　My hometown is very familiar to me; I know every street, every comer, and every store. IfI need to have my watch repaired, I know just the right place to go, For some this may be comforting, but I 10ng for more adventure. While most people do not want to find new places, I would love to wander around a new city, trying to figure out where everything is. It is hke a big puzzle, just waiting for me to put the pieces together.Living in a new place would also let me meet interesting, new people. Many people think you will lose out if you move away, but I think I would gain.I know everybody in my neighborhood already and I have some good friends in my hometown. However, without losing touch with my old firends, I would meet people with remarkable life stories in every new place I hve in. Also, all my old friends would be really happy to see me if I came by for a visit. We would have an extra special time together, because we do not see each other very often.　　The idea of discovering new places fascinates me and I would gain many new friends. Without similar previous experience, people start learning a new language at fifty, embark on a luxurious cruise around the world at sixty or begin tending bonsai trees at seventy. If people are willing t9 spend time and money on gaining new experiences once they stop working, it would be an enormous assetto the economy if we can persuade them to do this earlier. A part from the collective economical benefits, it also helps the individual. With the current progress of society, people need to keep up in their personal lives aswell.For instance,older people feel uncomfortable using computers, because they did not grow up with them like the younger generation did. Yet, with the recent high-speed development, more services than ever are offered online, such asbanking, buying airplane tickets, and searching information. It would improve older peoples lives if they learned how to use these services through adult education.　　To conclude,adult educationcanoffer bothpersonal and economical development.For these reasons, we should encourage everybody to never stop learning. （214 words）
