章節(jié)摘錄
插圖:I came to Beijing in I995 to learn about its artists, about their lives intransition and all that influenced them during this incredibly importantperiod of change in China. Given the atmosphere of opening and reform(begun in late x978) many artists I met were choosing to interpret freelythe normal, everyday aspects of their lives, so I went in search of thismyself, finding in the process that what contributes so greatly to thecharacter of Beijing is its people. The faces I found in Beijing became asimportant to me as the details of its architecture, old and new.Throughout the capital's long histor)~ much of everyday life hastaken place in and around its most central landmark, the Forbidden City.In I995, I was told that one of the best places to experience the "faceof Beijing" was at the early morning market just outside the MeridianGate entrance of the Forbidden City that opened there at sunrise andlasted only for a couple of hours. I went to it several times, fascinated byeverything that took place surrounding the market. Numerous barbersset up shop on the sidewalks with little more than a chair and a pairof scissors and they always had customers. You could also get a quickmassage or join in group tai ji quan exercises.
