十八歲的嘉莉，漂亮而膽小，性格單純，為了謀生，她滿懷著希望和對大都市繁華生活的幻想來到芝加哥，可是面對她的卻是貧困與失業(yè)。無奈之下，她和推銷員杜洛埃同居，后來又成為酒店經(jīng)理赫斯渥的情婦。在紐約，一個偶然的機會使嘉莉成為演員，并大獲成功。但是豐裕的生活并未帶給她幸福，她依然覺得孤獨、無助，她不知道耀眼的光華背后有多少謊言、邪惡和偽善在等著她……

作者簡介

　　德萊塞，（Theodore Dreiser l871.8.27～1945）美國小說家。出生于破產(chǎn)小業(yè)主家庭。曾長期在社會底層勞動掙扎。青年時期曾任報刊記者和編輯，并開始從事文學創(chuàng)作。1917年后傾向社會主義，1928年應邀訪蘇，1945年申請參加美國共產(chǎn)黨。德萊塞是傾向社會主義的美國現(xiàn)實主義作家。1928年訪蘇前，他的創(chuàng)作仍屬批判現(xiàn)實主義范疇。寫出了揭露美國社會貧富懸殊、道德淪喪的長篇小說《嘉莉妹妹》（1900）、《珍妮姑娘》（1911）和揭露金融資產(chǎn)階級的發(fā)家及其必然滅亡的長篇小說《欲望三部曲》（第1部《金融家》1912，第2部《巨人》1914，第3部《斯多葛》1947）。代表作長篇小說《美國的悲劇》（1925）通過一個窮教士兒子克萊特·格里菲斯為追逐金錢財勢墮落為蓄意殺人犯的故事，不僅揭示了利己主義惡性膨脹的嚴重后果，同時更揭露了金錢至上的美國生活方式對人的普遍的罪惡性腐蝕毒害作用。這時期作者盡管也受社會進化論和弗洛伊德心理分析學說的影響，且把它們運用于人物構(gòu)思和心理刻畫上，但他把他們跟社會環(huán)境緊密結(jié)合起來，并未陷入生物和情欲的泥淖，反使作品具有豐滿的現(xiàn)實主義內(nèi)容和巨大藝術(shù)感染力。1928年訪蘇后，隨著德菜塞政治立場的轉(zhuǎn)變，他的創(chuàng)作也開始走向社會主義現(xiàn)實主義道路。這一時期的作品有《德萊塞訪蘇印象記》（1928），政論集《悲劇的美國》（1931），短篇小說集《婦女群像》（1929）等。

　　Now was a slight chance to say a word in his own behalf.He leaned over quietly and continued his steady gaze. Hefelt the critical character of the period. She endeavouredto stir, but it was useless. The whole strength of a mansnature was working. He had good cause to urge him on.He looked and looked, and the longer the situation lastedthe more difficult it became. The little shop-girl wasgetting into deep water. She was letting her few supportsfloat away from her.　　"Oh," she said at last, "you mustnt look at me likethat."　　"I cant help it," he answered.　　She relaxed a little and let the situation endure,giving him strength.　　"You are not satisfied with life, are you?"　　"No," she answered, weakly.　　He saw he was the master of the situation——he felt it.He reached over and touched her hand,　　"You mustnt," she exclaimed, jumping up.　　"I didnt intend to," he answered, easily.　　She did not run away, as she might have done. Shedid not terminate the interview, but he drifted off into apleasant field of thought with the readiest grace.
