前言

　　高等職業(yè)教育的目標(biāo)是培養(yǎng)面向生產(chǎn)、建設(shè)、服務(wù)、管理第一線的高技能人才。為了適應(yīng)并推動(dòng)高等職業(yè)教育的發(fā)展，落實(shí)教育部《關(guān)于以就業(yè)為導(dǎo)向深化高等職業(yè)教育改革的若干意見》（教高[2004]1號(hào)）及《關(guān)于全面提高高等職業(yè)教育教學(xué)質(zhì)量的若干意見》（教高[2006]16號(hào)）精神，探索工學(xué)結(jié)合、任務(wù)驅(qū)動(dòng)要求下的教學(xué)模式改革，我們組織了教學(xué)一線的優(yōu)秀教師編寫了此教材，2007年，人民交通出版社申報(bào)本教材為普通高等教育“十一五”國家級(jí)教材并順利獲得批準(zhǔn)。本教材為高職教育汽車運(yùn)用技術(shù)、汽車檢測(cè)與維修、汽車技術(shù)服務(wù)與營銷等相關(guān)專業(yè)的專業(yè)英語教材，也可供相關(guān)專業(yè)工程技術(shù)人員、營銷人員閱讀?！　”窘滩挠烧憬煌殬I(yè)技術(shù)學(xué)院邊浩毅副教授擔(dān)任主編，并負(fù)責(zé)編寫其中的任務(wù)二、十、十一、十四、十五；浙江交通職業(yè)技術(shù)學(xué)院馬林才副教授負(fù)責(zé)編寫任務(wù)一、三、四、五、七、八；浙江交通職業(yè)技術(shù)學(xué)院孟亞娟講師負(fù)責(zé)編寫任務(wù)九、十三；浙江交通職業(yè)技術(shù)學(xué)院金初云講師負(fù)責(zé)編寫任務(wù)十六；杭州金豐豐田汽車銷售有限公司錢前總經(jīng)理負(fù)責(zé)編寫任務(wù)六、十二。北京理工大學(xué)的韓建保教授作為本教材的主審，對(duì)全書進(jìn)行了認(rèn)真審閱，提出了許多寶貴的修改意見，在此，我們向韓教授表示衷心的感謝。

　　Engine Measurement and Performance Characteristics　　The former chapter presented the scientific principles upon which the automobile engineoperates. It is time to expand on the topic of engine operation by exploring the many factorsthat influence engine performance. These factors include bore, stroke, displacement, com-pression ratio, compression pressure, volumetric efficiency, thermo efficiency, and me-chanical efficiency. There are a few negative factors that adversely affect the normal combus-tion process and can cause power loss and serious engine damage. These factors are, ofcourse, detonation and surface ignition.Bore　　The bore of an engine is a measurement taken inside the cylinder. Actually the bore is thediameter of the cylinder itself. The larger the cylinder bore, of course, the more powerfulwill be the power stroke because a bigger piston has more area on which the high-pressurecombustion gases can push down.Stroke　　The stroke is also a basic cylinder measurement. However, in this case, the measure-ment is that of the actual piston travel within the cylinder as it moves from TDC to BDC orback again. A square engine is one that has a bore and stroke of the same dimension; where-as, an oversquare engine has a bore greater than its stroke.
