內(nèi)容概要

故事發(fā)生在印度，當(dāng)時那里還有很多英國人。這些人或在政府、軍隊里，或在鐵路、貿(mào)易界工作。他們并不都像書中瑪麗的父母一樣，但是其中許多人雇傭了大量的印度仆人，而且有時歐洲母親并不在照顧孩子上花太多時間，炎熱的氣候?qū)W洲人不利，那里還有醫(yī)生們都所知甚少的疾病?，旣惥褪沁@樣成為一個不健康，甚至乖戾的女孩?！　‖旣惲私饬擞《戎?，英格蘭就顯得陌生了，而約克郡的草甸子則更為奇異了。那里冬季氣候寒冷，樹木稀疏，擋不住勁吹的狂風(fēng)。凸起的草甸上房屋很少，粗糙的野草對于羊群還尚可食用，但對于牛和別的農(nóng)場牲畜就不行了。約克郡人認(rèn)為這挻有益健康，但是一個來自印度而且并不快樂的小孩起初是不會這樣想的。
