The first major American composers wrote in the late 19th century and were strongly influenced by their European masters. Many American musicians went to Europe to learn music and their works were mainly in European styles. At the start of the 20th century, there appeared the first two, perhaps still the greatest, composers to write in an entirely American idiom: Scott Joplin and Charles Ives. In the 1920s and 1930s a new generation of distinctly American composers——Arnold Schonberg, Igor Stravinsky and Kurt Weill——immigrated into the United States. They had a very great influence on American composers and in turn were influenced by American music. In the 1970s and 1980s, American composers tended to return to much sweeter music and much less dissonant styles.
