前言

  近年來,我國的高等職業(yè)教育在國家政策的大力扶持下,得到了長足的發(fā)展,人才培養(yǎng)模式更加符合我國現(xiàn)階段經(jīng)濟(jì)發(fā)展的需求,課程設(shè)置更加重視實(shí)用知識的傳授和實(shí)踐能力的培養(yǎng)。教育主管部門與時俱進(jìn),對高職高專的英語教學(xué)適時做出調(diào)整,提出“實(shí)用為主,工學(xué)結(jié)合”的指導(dǎo)原則,在日常的英語教學(xué)中加大了專業(yè)英語教學(xué)的比重,凸顯了專業(yè)英語教學(xué)的重要性?!  稒C(jī)械英語》正是為了滿足廣大高職高專院校開設(shè)專業(yè)英語課程的要求,遵循教育部高等教育司頒發(fā)的《高職高專教育英語課程教學(xué)基本要求》的指導(dǎo)原則而進(jìn)行編寫的。為了做好這項(xiàng)工作,我們除了遵循教育部規(guī)定的一般原則外,還特別注意到了如下幾點(diǎn):  一、專業(yè)特色明顯。本教材所選的材料與一般的機(jī)械科普讀物不同,不是對于專業(yè)知識的簡單羅列,而是對專業(yè)知識的梳理介紹,目的是提高學(xué)生的專業(yè)英語閱讀能力,使其能夠在今后的工作中自主地吸收國際同行的有益經(jīng)驗(yàn)和知識。

  In the Periodic Table of Elements by a Russian chemist ,Dmitri Mendeleev,about half of the elements are metals.Metals are usually divided in totWO groups:ferrous and no nferrous.In contrast to ferrous,nonferrous metals do not containany iron.Copper,aluminum,chromium are some examples.  From the standpoint of commerce,however,an absolutely pure metal has never appealed to engineers,such as pure iron,which is too soft for machine parts.And of all these metallic elements。only a few are suitable for the engineering purpose.Steel and cast iron are the most common metals in use An alloy is a mixture of one or more elements in a metallic matrixFor example,steels are alloys of iron and carbon by adding one or more small amounts of the following elements:nickel,chromium,manganese,silicon,tungsten and so on.  Carbon is the most important element in steel.It determines the mechanical properties by the adding percentage of car bon.In this connection,low-carbon steels(1ess than 0.30%),with better forming properties.Are usually used for low-strength products.And medium-carbon steels(0.30%-0.60%)can meet the requirement of forgings.strength and ductility for mechanical parts or machines.
