前言

　　《實(shí)用英語》是一套供高職高專英語課程使用的教材。自1 995年正式出版發(fā)行以來，它所堅(jiān)持的內(nèi)容的實(shí)用性、教學(xué)的針對性和編寫教材的科學(xué)性受到了使用者的熱烈歡迎。廣大師生把它看作是我國?？茖哟斡⒄Z教學(xué)自己的教材。與此同時，他們本著愛護(hù)和培育這塊英語教學(xué)園地的精神，希望《實(shí)用英語》在發(fā)揚(yáng)其優(yōu)點(diǎn)的同時，能及時對其存在的不足進(jìn)行適當(dāng)?shù)男抻?，使之更加完善，更加符合?dāng)前高職高專層次英語教學(xué)的需要。為此，我們根據(jù)近年來廣大師生提出的改進(jìn)意見，再次對《實(shí)用英語》的《綜合教程》、 《教師參考書》、 《泛讀教程》和《綜合訓(xùn)練與自測》進(jìn)行了修訂。與此同時，我們還把原（《實(shí)用業(yè)務(wù)英語》納入到《實(shí)用英語》的體系中來，變成《實(shí)用英語》的第四冊，并在新修訂的《實(shí)用英語泛讀教程》前3冊的基礎(chǔ)上新編了《泛讀教程》第四冊，從而使這次改編的《實(shí)用英語》成為一套既含基礎(chǔ)英語又含業(yè)務(wù)英語的實(shí)用英語教程?！　　斗鹤x教程》第四冊與《實(shí)用英語綜合教程》第四冊配套使用，分8個單元，每個單元由兩篇文章組成。文章A（Passage A）為重點(diǎn)泛讀材料，供課堂上使用，文章B（PaSsage B）供學(xué)生課后獨(dú)立完成。全書選文既注意了與《綜合教程》的配合，又體現(xiàn)了多樣化，內(nèi)容涉及經(jīng)商之道、消費(fèi)者權(quán)益保護(hù)、版權(quán)保護(hù)、自我領(lǐng)導(dǎo)能力測試、現(xiàn)代管理理念、畢業(yè)實(shí)習(xí)、合同閱讀、外國專家在華工作經(jīng)歷與體會等。本書選材的標(biāo)準(zhǔn)是注重趣味性與知識性的結(jié)合，兼顧文理工各專業(yè)。書末附有閱讀文章中出現(xiàn)的所有生詞、常用表達(dá)法及專有名詞，并用中英文進(jìn)行了注釋。為了培養(yǎng)學(xué)生查閱字典的能力，在詞匯表的編排中，我們給出多種詞義，供學(xué)生查閱、選擇、判斷詞匯在文章中的具體含義。我們相信，以上安排將會有利于擴(kuò)大學(xué)生的閱讀量，提高學(xué)生的閱讀能力?！　　斗鹤x教程））第四冊總主編為大連理工大學(xué)孔慶炎教授，主編為長春工程學(xué)院安曉燦教授和北京交通大學(xué)包蘭宇副教授。1、2單元由長春工程學(xué)院景志華教授編寫，3、4單元由北京交通大學(xué)包蘭宇副教授編寫，5、6單元由沈陽工程學(xué)院劉然教授編寫，7、8單元由長春工程學(xué)院安曉燦教授編寫?！　榱耸埂秾?shí)用英語》不斷完善，編者希望使用本書的教師和學(xué)生在使用過程中繼續(xù)提出寶貴意見。

內(nèi)容概要

　　《實(shí)用英語泛讀教程4》是《實(shí)用英語泛讀教程》第四冊，全書共有8個單元，每單元分A、B兩篇文章。文章A為重點(diǎn)泛讀材料，供課堂上使用；文章B供學(xué)生課后獨(dú)立完成?！秾?shí)用英語》系列。教材是一套?？茖哟蔚墓灿⒄Z教材，是教育部規(guī)劃的高職高專英語教材。本套教材1995年正式出版發(fā)行，1999年至2000年進(jìn)行了第一次修訂。為了更加有利于學(xué)生英語應(yīng)用能力的培養(yǎng)，結(jié)合這幾年《實(shí)用英語》的教學(xué)使用反饋，修訂組以教育部2000年頒發(fā)的《高職高專教育英語課程教學(xué)基本要求（試行）》為依據(jù)，對《實(shí)用英語》進(jìn)行了第二次修訂。

　　With seven children of his own， Dad knew how trying a viSitto a barber could be for kids. Thats why he installed an old carousel horse next to the barber chair. A kid couldsit on the horse， grab hold of the plastic pommel and imagine he was Roy Rogers while Dad clipped. The boys in our town grew up thinking that having a haircut was synonym0us With gettinga pony ride.　　Dad kept a slew of good magazines and comics to read and an old soda machine in back. For a dime you could get a Coke or a root beer and cool off while you waited. Folks debated sports and complained about the weather. People congregated at Bobs Barbershop as much for the company as the cuts.　　Then came the late 1960s. Dad never imagined what a cultural revolution would do to hairstyles. But suddenly men didnt want their hair cut short any more and kids of my age didnt want it cut at all. Business slowed to a standstill.　　Dad didnt want to change his job. "ItS what I know best，" he said. "And t like being my own boss." So at the age of 46， after a quarter of century of hands-on experience， he swallowed his pride and went back to barber school. He learned new cuts and how to style a mans hair with a blow dryer. He set up a sleek and new establishment at the mall， with music and modern chrome chairs. Now the sign in front said： Mr. Vs Style Bar. But the shop still operated bn the principie that the customer comes first.
