前言

《綜合英語教程》（GeneralEnglish）共4冊。第一、二冊各含16個單元，第三、四冊各含14個單元。每個單元由兩篇課文組成，分成3大部分：語言技能訓(xùn)練、語言訓(xùn)練和拓展訓(xùn)練。第一部分和第二部分均圍繞課文1展開?！罢Z言技能訓(xùn)練”著重培養(yǎng)學(xué)生綜合使用語言的能力。該部分設(shè)有“讀前”、“讀中”和“讀后”各種語言技能活動，以閱讀為主線，帶動口頭表達(dá)和書面表達(dá)，以提高讀、說、寫的能力?！罢Z言訓(xùn)練”注重對詞匯、結(jié)構(gòu)、語義、修辭、語篇、文體等進(jìn)行分析和訓(xùn)練，以提高學(xué)生使用語言的敏感性和文化意識。課文2為附加閱讀，是對課文1在主題、語言和技能上的延伸。“拓展訓(xùn)練”是對本單元語言知識和技能的補(bǔ)充和擴(kuò)展，旨在較為系統(tǒng)地總結(jié)和復(fù)習(xí)中國學(xué)生在英語語言學(xué)習(xí)中的重點(diǎn)和難點(diǎn)，進(jìn)一步拓展未來教師應(yīng)該掌握的語言知識和技能技巧。

　　《綜合英語教程》是教育部師范司組織編寫的高等師范規(guī)劃教材。全書共由16個單元組成，每個單元含兩篇課文，分成三大部分：語言技能訓(xùn)練、語言訓(xùn)練和拓展訓(xùn)練。練習(xí)設(shè)計多樣，有利于培養(yǎng)學(xué)生獨(dú)立思考和獨(dú)立解決問題的能力?！　　毒C合英語教程》可作為高等師范英語專業(yè)之用，亦可供非英語專業(yè)人員和廣大英語愛好者自學(xué)英語之用。

Medicare and Medicaid costs for the elderly have similarly soared．They now account for more than 80 percent of all federal money spenton health care．fStatisticaf Abstracts．1 989d）．If the growth of Medicarewere to continue at its present rate．by the year 2000 it would cost more than Social Security--another impossible figure，of course，but one thatshows the collision course we are on．  The growing proportion of the elderly in our population addspressure to increase expenditures for Social Security，Medicare，andMedicaid．That the elderly make up a larger proportion of our population is due to two factors：improvements in sanitation and health care thatallow people to live longer，and the effects aboaion and other forms ofbirth control are having on our population distribution．Consequently,between the years 1 990 and 2000，the population of people 65 and overis expected to grow by 3，300，000，while our college-age population，18．to 24．will shrink by 910，000（Statisticaf Abstracts，1 989e）．
