前言

聽(tīng)力在英語(yǔ)學(xué)習(xí)諸技能中的重要性不言而喻,尤其對(duì)培養(yǎng)高年級(jí)學(xué)生的英語(yǔ)語(yǔ)言綜合運(yùn)用能力,提高交際能力,充實(shí)學(xué)生的社會(huì)文化知識(shí),發(fā)展學(xué)生的邏輯思維和創(chuàng)新能力起著至關(guān)重要的作用。本套教材主要供高等師范院校本科(專(zhuān)科起點(diǎn))英語(yǔ)專(zhuān)業(yè)聽(tīng)力教學(xué)使用。根據(jù)學(xué)生已具備了聽(tīng)力理解的基礎(chǔ)技能,本書(shū)著重培養(yǎng)學(xué)生在聽(tīng)力過(guò)程中的思考能力和記憶能力。思考能力包括推斷、猜測(cè)、聯(lián)想、總結(jié)和概括等;記憶能力包括回憶聽(tīng)力材料的中心思想、主要論點(diǎn)和重要細(xì)節(jié)。本教材共分上、下兩冊(cè)。上冊(cè)采用速度較慢的美國(guó)之音特別英語(yǔ)節(jié)目(Special English of the Voice of America)為教材主要內(nèi)容,其中包括了文化、科技、教育、環(huán)保、醫(yī)學(xué)等報(bào)道和美國(guó)英語(yǔ)詞語(yǔ)掌故(Words and Their Stories),乃外還選用了一些英國(guó)英語(yǔ)的聽(tīng)力材料。全書(shū)具有內(nèi)容廣泛、知識(shí)豐富、詞匯量大和實(shí)用性強(qiáng)等特色。本冊(cè)共由18課組成,每課分三部分。第一部分為特別英語(yǔ)節(jié)目的各種報(bào)道,為教學(xué)用的精聽(tīng)材料;第二部分主要是美國(guó)英語(yǔ)詞語(yǔ)掌故,為泛聽(tīng)材料;第三部分是聽(tīng)力理解強(qiáng)化練習(xí),難度略大于前兩部分,主要內(nèi)容是較長(zhǎng)的對(duì)話、談話或演說(shuō)、故事等等,可作為課后聽(tīng)力練習(xí)用。每部分都配有相應(yīng)的練習(xí)供學(xué)習(xí)者預(yù)習(xí)、復(fù)習(xí)、鞏固和提高。練習(xí)分主觀題和客觀題兩種類(lèi)型,有問(wèn)答、要點(diǎn)摘記、復(fù)述、討論、圖表填允、單詞填空、多項(xiàng)選擇、是非選擇等綜合練習(xí),以便學(xué)生通過(guò)練習(xí)掌握并鞏固所學(xué)的內(nèi)容。本書(shū)也可供非英語(yǔ)專(zhuān)業(yè)人員和廣大英語(yǔ)愛(ài)好者自學(xué)英語(yǔ)之用。

插圖:The Westinghouse Science Competition is the oldest competition in the United States to honour student scientists. The winners receive money to help pay for a university education. This year more than 1,600 students entered the competition. Forty were invited to Washington D.C. for the final competition. The judges looked for creativity in the projects when choosing the ten winners. The second place winner was 17-year-old Jennifer Yufei Lin of New York. She won 30,000 dollars for her project about controlling cell-growth. The third prize was 20,000 dollars. It went to 19-year-old John Lorance Stobb of South Dakota. He studied the effects of different teaching methods on 8-year-old children's understanding and enjoyment of science. He found that children who were involved in learning activities gained more useful information than those who read the same information in books. Projects of other finalists included studies dealing with mathematics, engineering, medicine, chemistry and environment. Scientists question the students before deciding who will win the competition. The winning students must show skill in solving all kinds of scientific problems.The Westinghouse Electric Company began its science competition during World War Two. The company wanted to provide support for high school students who were interested in science. Through the years, more than 95 percent of the winners have completed university studies in science, mathematics or engineering. Five winners later received the Nobel Prize for Scientific Research.
